Natural Rubber Latex Mattresses
All-natural rubber latex
is a renewable resource that is tapped from the rubber tree in the same general way that maple
syrup is tapped from the maple tree. Rest assured that this method of harvesting tree sap does not harm the tree. Rubber trees are grown
in plantations for the specific purpose of producing latex serum, and have a life span of
about twenty-five years before they are tapped-out.
The latex "serum" from the tree is minimally processed, injected with air to make a foam and then baked in a mattress-sized pan.
It is now a
dunlop latex
foam mattress layer. The
talalay latex
process involves a few more steps, but either type of latex foam
can
have very high natural rubber content.
However, some companies use the term "latex" even though their foam may be completely
synthetic latex.
Other companies blend the natural rubber with synthetic ingredients.
Even so-called "natural latex" is a phrase that only means at least 60% natural ingredients.
And the "natural" part may include fillers such as chalk, clay and ash.
And not all
talalay latex is created equal.
Latex International, the primary producer of
talalay, makes it using varying percentages of natural rubber, according to the purchaser's specifications.
Natural Rubber Content of Latex Foam
Only the purest natural rubber latex (NRL) is a renewable resource, and gives you peace of mind in
knowing your mattress is not off-gassing potentially harmful fumes.
Emerald
City
Organic
Sleep Solutions, Inc.
features organically grown NRL mattresses by
Savvy Rest.
With latex made byCocalatex in Kerala India, their NRL mattresses are never blended with synthetics or fillers.
They are made with as pure a natural rubber latex as can be made into foam, which means whether you choose dunlop
or talalay latex, your mattress will contain at least
95% pure, organically grown, plant-based NRL.
But most importantly, natural rubber has a very comfortable and supportive feel, unmatched by any other material.
There's no mistaking the feel of a NRL mattress. Come in to our store and try one for yourself!
The key to identifying good quality
latex
foam is to determine how much natural rubber it contains. You will need to ask about NRL content
because most companies do not share NRL content information. Very few use all NRL like Savvy Rest does.
Savvy Rest Brand All-Latex Mattresses
Savvy Rest's all-latex mattresses
have multiple non-slip layers of three-inch-thick NRL foam. The
Tranquility mattress is made of two layers and the Serenity
mattress has three layers. Each layer is available in soft, medium or firm density and in either talalay or dunlop latex.
Come visit our showroom, where you can try any possible combination of layers.
Full/double and larger Serenity and Tranquility mattresses can have a customized comfort-levels
on each side.
Each sleeping partner will love having their own choice of comfort. And
the snug-fitting mattress casing keeps the two latex halves pressed tightly together so that there
will never be a gap between the two sides nor any sagging in the middle Are you tired of mattresses that develop a body impression
in less than six months? The Savvy Rest
warranty
specifically guarantees that the mattress will not sag nor take a significant body impression for twenty years.
Natural rubber latex conforms to your body shape easily, which reduces pressure-points, yet it is supportive, which
helps keep you body in proper alignment. It also allows good air circulation, which helps
keep you comfortable and dry. Natural rubber latex is antimicrobial and also resists dust mites, mold and mildew.
And since our natural rubber latex is an organically grown, plant-based resource, the mattress is as gentle on Mother Earth
as it is healthy for you.
The mattress casing is made of certified
organic wool
batting
quilted between two layers of certified
organic cotton
ticking. The wool is processed at
Woolgatherer Carding Mill
of Northern California. It is an
Oregon Tilth
certified organic wool mill. The mill uses nearly 100% domestic wool, with about 25% coming from the
Coburg area.
When you sleep on wool, it wicks away moisture to keep
you dry and comfortable all night. Wool also helps maintain a comfortable body temperature. Sleeping on
wool also lets you avoid the
flame-retardant chemicals required of cotton-based mattresses,
because unlike cotton, the organic wool that makes up the mattress casing is
naturally flame-resistant.
Flame retardant chemicals
have dubious merit, and may actually cause
more harm than good.
Savvy Rest Hybrid Mattresses
Savvy Rest also makes two hybrid, or Simple Fit, mattresses. The Simplicity is a combination of natural rubber latex and coir. The top of the mattress is a three-inch layer of natural rubber latex, just like the layers in the Serenity and Tranquility. The lower half of the seven-inch-high mattress contains about four inches of coir. This is our least expensive latex hybrid mattress. It is quite firm, and some people might need to add a mattress topper to make it a little softer. It is available in our showroom to try.
The Earthspring is Savvy Rest's other hybrid mattress, and is also available to try in our showroom. It is a combination of natural rubber latex and innersprings. Read more about the Earthspring mattress.
The Savvy Rest Latex Mattress
Topper
The Savvy Rest Harmony mattress topper is one three-inch layer of soft talalay latex with the same
high quality casing materials as the mattress.
It can change the firmest mattress into a plush, cozy soft sleeping surface. Come visit our showroom and see what this topper can do!
Shortcomings of Conventional Mattresses
Manufacturers of conventional mattresses typically use a lot of
cotton fiber batting
and polyurethane foam to cushion the tops of innerspring mattresses. But cotton fiber packs down over time,
absorbs moisture and then attracts dust mites and even mold and mildew.
Plus, cotton crop fields are known to have a negative effect on the
environment.
And
polyurethane
and other
synthetic foams, especially
memory foam,
or viscoelastic foam may expose you to a
variety of chemicals.
And these foams are also very flammable.
Because conventional mattresses are made with these flammable materials, they must be treated with
flame retardant chemicals
to meet federal government regulations.
Here is an authoritative article
about chemicals in conventional mattresses.
When you visit our store, rest assured that none of our products contain chemical flame retardants or any
other synthetic chemicals or materials. You will be able to tell when you walk into our store and smell.....nothing.
But go to any mattress discounter, walk inside and then take a big sniff. You know that it will have certain smell.
Your eyes may begin to burn, and your nose may begin to run. Those effects are nature's way of telling you something's wrong there.
How We Customize Your Latex Mattress
We guarantee that you will get the perfect comfort level in your new mattress because you can test-drive any possible combination of soft, medium and
firm density dunlop or talalay latex in our showroom. For instance, you can try firm on the bottom, medium in the
middle, and soft on top. Or, you might want to try medium on bottom, with soft in the middle and soft on top.
We will change the layers around in our showroom mattresses until you get just the feel you are looking for.
With so many possible configurations, it is easy to find exactly the comfort you are looking for.
The short video in this link, courtesy of Savvy Rest, shows some of the more
popular configurations.
We have most mattress configurations in stock and ready for delivery, but at the most it will only take
about three weeks to deliver or ship to you free of charge.
Adjust Your Mattress
Firmness at Home
Trying a mattress for a short time in the showroom does not always tell you how it will feel in the
long-run. After sleeping on the mattress for a while at home, you may decide it should be softer or firmer.
A valuable feature of a
Savvy Rest mattress is that you can make it softer or firmer after you get it home.
Simply change the order in which
the latex layers are stacked makes a significant difference in how the mattress feels. For instance, if you
have a soft density top layer and a medium density middle layer, and you want a firmer mattress, move the medium density layer
up to the top and the soft density layer down to the middle. If you wanted the mattress even firmer,
you can switch the soft density top layer with the firm density bottom layer. Please see the illustration below.
Exchange Latex Foam Mattress Layers
If being able to move your layers around yourself has still not given you the perfect
comfort-level, you have another option to get your mattress to feel just right.
Savvy Rest offers a
layer exchange option that
allows you to exchange as many layers as you want within ninety (90) days of delivery, and you
only pay for shipping.
Baby Crib Mattresses
Emerald
City
Organic
Sleep Solutions, Inc. of Eugene keeps in-stock the all-natural Savvy Rest latex mattresses
sized to fit nearly all baby cribs.
These wonderful mattresses are made from five-inch-thick, firm dunlop latex.
They have an organic wool and organic cotton casing, just like the full-sized Savvy Rest mattresses.
Since infants have sensitive, undeveloped immune systems their health can
benefit tremendously
from a synthetic-free and chemical-free, organic mattress. Read this article at
Salon magazine
and we expect you will become quite concerned about the chemicals used in cotton-based crib mattresses.
Here is a positive testimonial about Savvy's crib mattress from a couple's website titled
Young House Love.
We have a Shepherd's Dream brand wool crib mattress
that is also ideally suited for baby.
We have organic cotton crib sheets, organic wool mattress pads, puddle pads, organic wool crib comforters and
organic cotton crib blankets.
We also carry a beautiful pacific maple, fixed-side,
baby crib by Pacific Rim Woodworking.
Natural Rubber Latex Pillows
Having the right pillow is nearly as important as having the right mattress. And it is important that the pillow
"match" the mattress and your sleeping style. In general, a softer mattress requires a lower pillow than
a firmer mattress. This is because, all other things being equal, you will sink farther into a soft mattress than
a firm mattress. The farther you sink into a mattress, the more your head is already propped-up by the mattress
itself. Another basic consideration is that side-sleepers tend to need higher pillows than back-sleepers
because a back-sleeper's head is closer to the mattress than a side-sleeper's head. So when you pick
out your pillow in our store, test it out on one of our mattresses that most closely resembles your own mattress.
Just as a reminder, natural rubber latex is a plant-based material. You can feel confident that it a
good place to rest your head every night. We carry solid Rejuvenite
talalay pillows from LATEX INTERNATIONAL, and both solid and
shredded dunlop latex pillows from
Savvy Rest.
Latex pillows provide
great comfort and support. We have them in a "soap shape" and also in a "contour" shape. The dunlop style
tends to be medium-soft, while the talalay is very soft. The shredded latex pillows have
the ultimate in malleability and are also adjustable in height.
And finally, we have organic wool pillows.

Pet Beds
We have organic pet beds in-stock by Savvy Rest. These come in two styles. Both are natural rubber latex in a washable organic cotton cover. One style uses a formed layer of latex; the other uses shredded latex. The cotton cover is available in either ivory or black and they are washable!

standard size mattress from which the custom size will be cut, plus a $200 customization fee.
