  Natural Rubber Latex Mattresses

All-natural rubber latex is a renewable resource that is tapped from the rubber tree in the same general way that maple syrup is tapped from the maple tree. 

The latex "serum" from the tree is minimally processed, injected with air and then baked in a mattress-sized pan.  It is now a dunlop latex foam mattress layer.   The talalay latex process involves a few more steps, but either type of latex foam can have very high natural rubber content.

However, some companies use the term "latex" even though the foam may be completely synthetic latex.  Other companies blend the natural rubber with synthetic ingredients.   Even so-called "natural latex" is a phrase that only means at least 60% natural ingredients.   And the "natural" part may include fillers such as chalk, clay and ash.

And not all talalay latex is created equal.   Latex International, the primary producer of talalay, makes it using varying percentages of natural rubber, according to the purchaser's specifications.

   Natural Rubber Content of Latex Foam

  The Savvy Rest Brand Latex Mattress

All Savvy Rest mattresses have separate, no-slip layers of three-inch thick natural rubber latex foam.   The Tranquility mattress is made of two layers and the Serenity mattress has three layers.   Each layer is available in soft, medium or firm density and in either talalay or dunlop latex.

Full/double mattresses and larger can have a different firmness on each by allowing different layer choices for each side of the mattress.  Each sleeping partner can have their own choice of comfort.  And the point where the layer halves meet in the center is almost imperceptible.  The snug-fitting mattress casing keeps the two halves tightly together and there will never be any gap between the two sides nor any sagging in the middle   In fact, the Savvy Rest warranty specifically states that the mattress will not sag or take a significant body impression for twenty full years.

Natural rubber latex conforms to your body shape easily, which reduces pressure-points, yet it is supportive, which helps keep you body in proper alignment.   It also allows good air circulation, which helps keep you comfortable and dry.   Natural rubber latex is antimicrobial and also resists dust mites, mold and mildew.   And since natural rubber latex is a plant-based, renewable resource, the mattress is as gentle on Mother Earth as it is healthy for you.

The mattress casing is made of certified organic wool batting quilted between two layers of certified organic cotton ticking.  The wool is produced at Woolgatherer Carding Mill of Northern California.   It is an Oregon Tilth certified organic wool mill.  The mill uses nearly 100% domestic wool, with about 25% coming from the Coburg area.  

When you sleep on a thick layer of fine wool, it wicks away moisture to keep you dry and comfortable all night.  Wool also helps maintain a comfortable body temperature.  Sleeping on wool also lets you avoid the flame-retardant chemicals required of cotton-based mattresses, because unlike cotton, the organic wool that makes up the mattress casing is naturally flame-resistant.

  Shortcomings of Conventional Mattresses

Manufacturers of conventional mattresses typically use a lot of cotton fiber batting and polyurethane foam to cushion the tops of innerspring mattresses.   But cotton fiber packs down over time, absorbs moisture and then attracts dust mites and even mold and mildew.  Cotton crop fields are also known to have a negative effect on the environment.

And polyurethane and other synthetic foams, especially memory foam, may expose you to a variety of chemicals.  And these foams are also very flammable.

  How We Customize Your Latex Mattress

You can be sure to get the perfect comfort level because you can try any possible combination of soft, medium or firm density dunlop or talalay in our showroom.   For instance, you can try firm on the bottom, medium in the center, and soft on top.   Or, you might want to try medium on bottom, with soft both in the center and on top.  We will help you arrive at just the right combination.   And with so many possible configurations, you can be sure to get exactly the support and comfort you are looking for.

  Adjust Your Mattress
   Firmness at Home

As you may know, trying a mattress for a short time in the showroom does not always tell you how it will feel in the long-run.  After sleeping on the mattress for a while at home, you may decide it should be softer or firmer.  A valuable feature of a Savvy Rest mattress is that you can make it softer or firmer after you get it home.

Simply change the order in which the latex layers are stacked and make a significant difference in how the mattress feels.   For instance, if you have a soft density top layer and a medium density middle layer, and you want a firmer mattress, move the medium density layer up to the top and the soft density layer down to the middle.   Please see the illustration below.

  Exchange Latex Foam Mattress Layers

It is unlikely, but if being able to move your layers around yourself has still not given you the perfect comfort you are looking for, you have yet another option to get your mattress to feel just right.   Savvy Rest offers a layer exchange option that allows you to exchange as many layers as you want within ninety (90) days of delivery, and you only pay for shipping.

  Baby Crib Mattresses

  W.J. Southard Latex Futon Mattress

W.J. Southard  has been in business since 1915 making very comfortable, high-quality mattresses by hand.  Their latex futon mattress has 4 inches of natural dunlop latex at its core.  The organic cotton that surrounds the latex is domestically grown, and pesticide-free.  The outer-most layer is domestic, organic wool to help keep you dry and comfortable.   The thick, outer layer of wool also allows the mattress to be free of chemical flame retardants. 

We also have an innerspring futon mattress that is just as organic as the latex style.

  Natural Rubber Latex Pillows

Having the right pillow is nearly as important as having the right mattress.  And it is important that the pillow "match" the mattress and your sleeping style.  In general, a softer mattress requires a lower pillow than a firmer mattress.  This is because, all other things being equal, you will sink farther into a soft mattress than a firm mattress.  The farther you sink into a mattress, the more your head is already propped-up by the mattress itself.  Another basic consideration is that side-sleepers tend to need higher pillows than back-sleepers because a back-sleeper's head is closer to the mattress than a side-sleeper's head.  So when you pick out your pillow in our store, test it first on one of our mattresses that most closely resembles your own mattress.

Just as a reminder, natural rubber latex is a plant-based material.  You can feel confident that it a good place to rest your head every night.   We carry solid Rejuvenite talalay pillows from LATEX INTERNATIONAL, and both solid and shredded dunlop latex pillows from Savvy Rest.  Latex pillows provide great comfort and support.  We have them in a "soap shape" and also in a "contour" shape.  The dunlop style tends to be medium-soft, while the talalay is very soft.  The shredded latex pillows have the ultimate in malleability and are also adjustable.
