The Nuno Technique
The technique I mainly use in making lightweight and supple felts is termed
"Nuno".
By manipulating wool fiber through a sheer woven fabric I am able to make felted fabric with
characteristics very different from traditional heavy-duty felts used for yurts, rugs, and
industrial parts. Colored fibers blend and flow into each other, producing complex layers of
shape and color that provide depth, subtlety and movement.
Nuno felting offers endless possibilities for transparency creating surprising surface designs,
diverse texturing by way of layering materials that creates a finished piece with great multi
dimensions. Because of this watery process, the design often turns out slightly different from
what might be expected. This makes the work very exciting and prone to happy accidents!
I enjoy working with wool because it is a renewable resource and a healthy component of a sustainable
ecology. Ninety percent of my felt work has been created from recycled wool, in fact it was once a
large tapestry commissioned for a downtown bank and then later given to the
University of Oregon and
hung in
Lawrence Hall
for over a decade.
