Organic Innerspring Mattresses

In its showroom, Emerald City Organic Sleep Solutions, Inc. of Eugene has the high-quality, Original Southard organic innerspring mattress by W.J. SOUTHARD MATTRESS.

Southard Mattress has been in business since 1915 making very comfortable, high-quality innerspring mattresses by hand. The current generation of Southards has endowed their long-standing mattress design with organic materials.

The certified organic cotton batting inside their mattresses is domestically grown, and pesticide-free. It rests on top of the recycled steel springs of their high-quality innerspring units. This airy location helps keep the batting dry and free of allergens such as mildew and dust mites.

All W.J. SOUTHARD mattresses feature a casing made of Eco-Wool, covered in hand-sewn, luxurious certified organic cotton grown domestically by the Texas Organic Cotton Marketing Cooperative. As you probably know, wool helps keep you dry and comfortable, and it also is naturally flame resistant which allows their mattresses to be free of chemical flame retardants.

Their mattresses can be placed directly on a platform bed, a foundation or a box spring. This flexibility lets you alter the comfort level of this mattress, plus ensures that you can use the mattress on whatever kind of bed you already have.

Regular W.J. Southard mattresses have a twenty year warranty. The first ten years are not prorated and the last ten years are prorated. Futon mattresses have a five year warranty, all of which is not prorated. The warranty covers materials and workmanship as well as covers the mattress taking a significant body impression.

Horsehair and Latex Innerspring Mattresses

For the ultimate in sleeping comfort, we will soon have in our showroom the W.J. SOUTHARD Horsehair and Latex Mattress from The 1915 Collection. Read the paragraph above for information on the general characteristics of a W.J. SOUTHARD mattress, then below for the specifics of this wonderful and unique mattress.

We believe this mattress to be the most comfortable in the world. It is made of organic materials and contains no chemical flame retardants. At the core are pocket springs. This style of covered spring is considered the best type for comfort as well as insulating movement on one side of the bed from the other side. On each side of the pocket springs is horsehair. Horsehair is the finest of mattress fillers. It retains is springy quality almost indefinitely and provides a degree of comfort unmatched by any other material. Like wool, it also helps to keep you dry and comfortable. A top-layer of uniformly soft natural latex augments the qualities of the horse hair. A layer of Eco-Wool then completes the interior with the entire mattress being then covered in organic cotton fabric. As you can see in the image below, this is a two-sided mattress, with the contents described above being on top and bottom for extra mattress life.

Caring for any SOUTHARD mattress

Organic Box Spring

Like their mattress, the W.J. SOUTHARD box spring is hand-made using organic, domestic materials. A queen size has 425, free-end offset coils made from 13.5 gauge recycled steel. The frame is made of Canadian Spruce, and the casing is all organic wool batting and organic cotton fabric. Both queen and king sizes use two separate box springs. This makes it much easier to get the box spring through doorways, and also provides for more options when configuring each side of the bed differently.

A new box spring will match your new W.J. SOUTHARD mattress's appearance. More importantly it will enhances the performance, life-span and comfort of the mattress. If your old mattress is worn-out, then so is its box spring. Money spent on a new box spring will extend the life of the mattress.

Organic Innerspring Futon Mattress

Innerspring Futon Mattress with Organic Casing

W.J. SOUTHARD hand-makes a very comfortable, high-quality innerspring futon mattress. This innerspring futon mattress has the same number of coils as the same sized regular mattress. It is very comfortable, and except for the innerspring unit, is made entirely of organic cotton and wool. The outer-most layer is domestic, organic wool to help keep you dry and comfortable. The thick, outer layer of wool also allows the mattress to be free of chemical flame retardants.

We also have an latex futon mattress that is just as organic as the innerspring style.

These mattresses can be sold separately, or used with our Strata Furniture brand high quality futon frames.
